Leo Horoscope for May 2013

This should be a very exciting month for you, dear Leo, especially in regard to your career. If you've been anxious to get a promotion or an offer for a new position, the planets are lining up to help you in a big way. If you already have a position you love, or are self-employed, this month will allow you to score a major victory, perhaps by bringing in a new client or achieving a very difficult task. You will hear praise and applause - whatever is going on, it's sure to thrill you. Let me show you why you should feel happy about your professional prospects. To show you the big picture, we should start with late last month, April.

We are now in eclipse season, with three eclipses coming in the space of only one month. That's not usual - it is more typical to see two eclipses in a row, two weeks apart - but this does happen when one family of eclipses comes to an end (in this case Gemini-Sagittarius) and a new family is starting up (Taurus-Scorpio). Eclipses always fall on a new moon or full moon, so they arrive two weeks apart. When one family of eclipses starts up, they tend to continue coming for 18 to 24 months (arriving in pairs about every 6 months). We have had the Gemini-Sagittarius series since June 2011. Eclipses fall in all different degrees, so most people feel some but not all in the series, depending on the mathematics of planets in your individual chart. Eclipses are powerful - much more so than typical full moons or new moons - and if your birthday falls close to the mathematical degree of that eclipse, it will mark a major turning point.

You just experienced a lunar (full moon) eclipse on April 25, in Scorpio 6 degrees, and that one lit your house of home and family. You may have moved or changed the look and feel of your home in some significant way. If you weren't changing your home, or dealing with people connected with your home, such as your landlord, roommate, contactor, home designer, or other person, then you may have been thinking about your parents, also included in this part of your chart.

You may have seen a home or family oriented matter come to an end, for the April 25 date was a full moon lunar eclipse, and full moons bring things to final culmination. Sometimes that's really good - you may have moved to a beautiful new space, or renovated your kitchen, seeing the end to all the work being done by the contractors. Whatever you decided at the end of April would stay in place a very long time. Saturn was conjunct that full moon, so you likely felt the seriousness or longevity of any decisions you were making.

Now, we have a very friendly new moon solar eclipse in Taurus 20 degrees, May 9, to light your house of honors, awards, achievement, and fame. This eclipse is light and happy, nothing like the last eclipse. Solar eclipses are important for Leo - you are ruled by the Sun - and of course, solar eclipses are all about the Sun. Solar eclipses are generally not as emotional as lunar eclipses and tend to bring up exciting new opportunities.

This path will lead you to a fantastic career development. Not only will the Sun and new moon eclipse be in you tenth house of fame, but Venus (popularity), Mercury (news), and Mars (energy) will be there, too. That's a lot of planets crowded in your sector of career status and reputation! I am so happy to report that Mars will be conjunct the Sun, giving you courage, determination, and drive. People will notice you with Mars in your "house of dignity"(as the ancients called that part of the chart), and they will pay attention to what you have to say. Venus in that house will make you a leader others will want to follow, and Mercury will give you the gift of articulate communication. This means May will be your biggest month of 2013 for career progress.

I feel you should pull out all the stops and go for the gold. Your resume seems impeccable, and the evidence of that is the position of Pluto, now in your sixth house of work projects, in ideal angle to Mars. That's huge! It seems the experience you've had in the past will now put you front and center for an exciting new title or for praise, applause, and lots of positive publicity in the days that follow May 9.

What happens now will affect you for a year or more, and will become a jewel in your crown. Keep in mind, I can tell you when to act (after May 9), and in which part of your life (in this case, your career), but without your involvement very little will happen. You must bring your energy to the table and make things happen! While it may be possible to assume you may get the offer of your dreams through a random phone call or email, it is less likely to happen that way. You'd be wise to cast a wide net to generate an array of offers when you have such stunning, sparkling stars for career progress. After you do that, you can choose among the best.

Watch what happens on May 17 when Mars will reach 20 degrees Taurus, the degree of the eclipse. That may be a big career day for you.

Sometimes an eclipse takes a month to the day from when it appeared to deliver its prize - so that means if you do not notice anything happening now, keep your eyes on June 9, plus or minus five days. Still, having said this, I feel it is much more likely that you will hear something exciting and career-related now. If you get invited to interview for a new position after the eclipse arrives, agree to do it. The new job you would be discussing is a big step up - this would NOT be a lateral move similar to your present job. You are coming up in the world this month!

Remarkably, we have one more eclipse, May 25, a full moon lunar eclipse, in Sagittarius at 4 degrees. This eclipse will fall in your true love sector and may bring any number of different, often opposite, results. A lot will depend on what your recent experiences in love have been. On one hand, you may meet your one true love under this eclipse, or if you have already met that person but feel you have not been treated well by this person, you may leave. Lunar eclipses usually bring a sense of urgency to make a decision, so if you are dating, you will see your relationship change and move forward suddenly. If you are in love, you may be talking about a commitment in the future.

Eclipses shine a light of truth on a situation, so you may learn something you had not known, and if so, it would be revealed quite unexpectedly. Neptune in hard angle to this eclipse suggests the eclipse will act like a lever to bring truth to the surface, fast. If you have had an unrealistic view of your lover, the eclipse may reveal certain truths. Just in case, however, make sure you learn all you can about any new person you may be dating, as Neptune does have a tendency to cloud judgment.

The best part about this eclipse is that Uranus will be very friendly, and that's a relief - you always want Uranus to be working with you, not against you! Uranus is very electric - you may find the chemistry quite amazing. You may travel far, very possibly overseas, with your sweetheart / spouse as a result of this eclipse, and if so, this trip would be important in some way. Things that happen at eclipse time have weight, and seem to have an important influence on the future.

The fifth house, where this eclipse is based, also rules conception, so you may find out a baby is on the way. Or you may hear news about your child and be happy for what your child achieves.

The house where the eclipse will fall rules creativity, so you may see your book be published or see a creative endeavor you've worked on a long time be launched. This will could be a big moment, so in that case, you'll be ready to celebrate.

If your birthday falls on July 26, plus or minus five days, this eclipse will speak directly to you. If you have your natal chart, see if you have a planet at 4 degrees (or within five degrees) of Sagittarius, Aries, or Leo, and that planet will be energized, so observe what happens and jot down a quick note on your calendar.

You are fortunate that Venus will glide through Gemini most of the month, from May 10 to June 2. Gemini is a friendly sign for you - Gemini's air element makes your fire element burn more brightly.

One of your most festive and romantic days of the month, possibly of the year, will be when Venus links to Jupiter on May 28. (This has an area of influence of plus or minus one day, but it will be stronger BEFORE the aspect hits, and decline in energy after.) You may give a party on the long weekend, May 25-27, with great success. This will be the Memorial Day weekend for those living in the US, a popular holiday. Venus' meeting with Jupiter ensures a happy time to be away. (This weekend will be much better than Independence Day, July 4.) If you are based in another country, you still will find May 28 ultra special for love, friendship, and fun. You may have a four-star social event to attend as well. When Venus is prominent, luxury and pampering can't be far behind.

The day before, May 27, will bring Mercury to Jupiter, making this a sensational time to travel, to give a speech, to hear good news, or to sign a contract. This is a spectacular day that will only happen once in 2013. It's been twelve years since these two planets, Mercury and Jupiter, have met in Gemini, a sign so very good for you. Make the most of this lively day. If you are working on writing a speech or a manuscript, you'll find all the right words, and your flow will be remarkable.

As you see, this will be a big month, when your career and your love life will bring news. Eclipses draw on the energy you've already put into a situation, so much will depend on what you have done to get ahead, and how you handle relationships. If you operate with an open, honest heart, the universe will reward you. Your career aspects will shine from May 9 to 23. After that, planets will begin to move to Gemini, an easy place for you to host those planets, so you'll be able to let down your hair and have fun. This has the makings of a landmark month, dear Leo!

You will be given a rare opportunity to seize the day to make a name for yourself in your career, dear Leo. This month will be your most critical month of 2013 for career progress, for you have a cluster of planets, all moving together in Taurus, including Venus, Mercury, Mars, and your ruling star, the Sun, giving this group extra importance. All these heavenly bodies will await the arrival of the new moon solar eclipse, May 9. In the ten days that follow it, you must be ready to take action and aim for the job of your dreams - the universe wants you to have it, and all you need to do is go after it.

If you are already in a position you love, or if you have your own business that you enjoy, this month you can present an idea or launch an initiative that will have enormous potential for success. This new moon solar eclipse will be conjunct Mars indicating you will be ready to make a bold move. Mars will stay in your tenth house of fame and honors until May 31, not to come back to this same area of your chart for two years. This is your moment to make your big career victory, so begin your planning, steel your courage, and push forward with vigor.

The plan is to keep your hands on the steering wheel and your eyes on the road. Do not let socializing distract you from working toward your career aims during the first three weeks. With many of the planets in Taurus congregating in your eleventh house of friends / events / new people at month's end, you will have all the opportunities you need to step out and kick up dust - later in the month.

The lunar eclipse, a full moon, due on May 25, will have you thinking about romance, and it may be that you meet someone new or decide about a person you've been dating. Eclipses illuminate information that has remained hidden, so you may hear news that surprises you. News maybe happy or not so happy, depending on your present situation and the direction your relationship has been heading for a while, whether you were aware of this or not. Alternatively, your thoughts may go to a pregnancy or child you have now.

Also covered by the eclipse May 25 will be a creative project you have been working on for some time and that may be finalized now - and funded.

Neptune will be in hard angle to the lunar eclipse May 25, bringing up a conversation about money that involves you and your romantic partner, or that involves a pregnancy, a child you have now, or creative project that you will be in the process of finishing. This discussion may become confusing or stressful. Still, Uranus will be very favorable, so a foreign person, perhaps someone who speaks with an accent in your city or abroad, may be helpful. Any sort of legal action would also be favorable to you - perhaps you will file a trademark at this time. It is also possible that a long trip you take spontaneously will turn out to be quite beneficial to you, immediately and in the long run.

Jupiter will conjoin Mercury first, on May 27, and then Venus will meet with Jupiter on May 28, both representing sensational annual events - so things should go VERY well. All may end well if you refuse to rush and give the matter a little extra thought.

Most Romantic Dates: May 6-7, 10-12, 16-17 (both excellent), 18, 25 (wild card, but looks like it could be good), 27, 28, and 31.

Your career will be on fire once the solar eclipse of May 9 comes by - this is your best point of 2013 to start interviewing for a new job. See what comes up and take all offers seriously. You will have a crown of stars supporting this eclipse.

Watch May 16, the day Mars will reach 20 degrees Taurus. Mars may trigger a big career opportunity or praise on this day.

A new romance may start up if you are unattached, on or near the lunar eclipse May 25. Again, this will be an important moment in time for you.

Planets will move toward your people / events / friendship sector at month's end, giving balance to the career emphasis you will feel in early month. Friends will start to become more prominent in your life.

Venus will be in Gemini from May 10 to June 2, a place that will be very compatible with yours. Use this period to make spa appointments or salon or barber shop visits, and attend to upgrading your looks.

To celebrate the debut of Mad Men's sixth season, the editors at indie pop culture magazine PAPER called on me, Susan Miller, to do the natal horoscope charts of three of the show's main characters: Don Draper, Joan Holloway, and Peggy Olson, as show writers had clearly mentioned each of these particular character's birthday in the script during the course of the five seasons of the show. I was also asked to compare two charts for Don Draper - that of his actual biological birthday (when he was born Richard "Dick" Whitman) and that of the birth date he adopted after assuming the name and identity of 'Don Draper.'

I look the information and chose a birth city and time of birth for each of the three fictional characters. I did this based on bits and pieces of information revealed about each character over the show's many seasons. (Note that I did not do the charts of the actors who played the parts in Mad Men - that would have been an entirely different article. I focused only on the three fictional characters.)

In the past, I have been called on by Hollywood to collaborate with writers in character development because astrology, with its firm structure and fascinating layers of complexity, can show clearly the intricate shadings of personality. At the same time, I can help a writer maintain the integrity of the character. Astrology can be a rich source of fascinating information about a person's makeup - this is true whether the person is fictional or real.

To be clear, the Mad Men writers did NOT call on me in advance to help in character development for the show, although as I just mentioned, I have done this for other writers not connected to this show (and whose names will remain private). This was my first time to discuss a character AFTER the character's personality had been strongly developed over time!

This was a lot of fun. I not only looked at the personality of the three Mad Men characters, but when appropriate, I looked to the future to add some of my own ideas of what might come next for each character.
